Psyllium husk - or psyllium fibre - is the outer layer of the psyllium seeds from the psyllium plant, Plantago ovata, and is considered a valuable source of fibre. It is made by milling or grinding to remove the seed’s outer layer, where the fibre is highly concentrated. This psyllium fibre is a non-digestible carbohydrate that can provide several health-related benefits.

The Psyllium Powder is finer than the Psyllium Husk.

Digestive Health:
It regulates digestion and forms a gel that moves through the digestive tract, helping trap and remove waste. (One of our biggest clients for Psyllium husk is a Veterinary Hospital that uses it to treat horses with sand colic!)

Putting the “glue” back in gluten-free baking:
Another “why” you would use Psyllium husks is to add it to gluten-free recipes which need a form of bonding to keep gluten-free flours from tasting like sand! You will thus likely find the ingredient psyllium husk in gluten-free baking recipes.

Help maintain healthy blood sugar levels:
When taken with meals, psyllium husk has been shown to help maintain healthy glucose or blood sugar levels.

Psyllium husk can be incorporated into your diet by adding it to smoothies, muffins, muesli or if you are not faint-hearted by mixing a tablespoon to a glass of water and quickly down it (it becomes a gooey gel within seconds!)
